چکیده

Cloke et al. (2006) discuss an interesting topic of runoff generation, a central theme in hydrology. While their numerical experiment reproduced the physical experiment of Abdul and Gillham (1984) with good agreement, I feel that their proposed generalization of the model results to more realistic natural settings of riparian zones is not perfectly well supported. This is so because the stream channel initially is disconnected from the groundwater in Abdul and Gillham (1984) experiment which is replicated by Cloke et al. (2006) (Figs. 2, 4, and 6) in their above numerical study. In my opinion the initially disconnected stream setting ought to be replaced by a more common (at least in humid climates) perennially gaining stream example where groundwater is in continuous contact with the channel through the streamaquifer interface permitting immediate water fluxes across it when responding to precipitation. This more realistic boundary condition at the stream-aquifer interface will allow rapid groundwater inflow to the stream and should be

Indeed, since the first paper by Abdul and Gillham (1984), many comments and replies on this topic have followed in the journal literature (e.g., Zaltsberg, 1986 vs. Gillham and Abdul...

Using numerical modelling to evaluate the capillary fringe groundwater ridging hypothesis of streamflow generation

The controls on pre-event water contributions to streamflow are still poorly understood, despite a number of proposed processes. One of the most common is the capillary fringe induced groundwater ridging mechanism, identified in many environments as a control on rapid mobilization of groundwater into the channel during events. Nevertheless, despite widespread acceptance, there is little evidenc...

Experimental and Numerical Modeling of the Effect of Groundwater Table Lowering on Bearing Capacity of Shallow Square Footings

The lowering of the groundwater table causes the area above the water table to become unsaturated and capillary phenomena to appear in this zone. This means that the bearing capacity of shallow footings will be influenced by capillary stress or matric suction. In this research, the effect of groundwater table lowering on the bearing capacity of a shallow square model footing on dense sand has b...

Forecasting of Groundwater Table and Water Budget under Different Drought Scenarios using MODFLOW Model (Case Study: Garbaygan Plain, Fars Province, Iran)

Groundwater drought is a natural hazard that develops when groundwater systems are affected by climatical drought, when climatical drought occures, first groundwater recharge, later groundwater levels and groundwater discharge decrease. The origin of drought is a deficit in precipitation and that takes place in all the elements that comprise the hydrological cycle (flow in the rivers, soil mois...
